This project revamped the finance data warehouse of the world’s largest retailer, transitioning it into a well-structured data lake hosted on Google Cloud. By establishing a single source of truth, we centralized and simplified data access, significantly enhancing the accuracy of financial reporting.

Three key challenges

Decentralized information: Various financial data sources over the course of 10 years, which led to decentralized information.
Outdated data: Dealing with outdated, duplicate, and inaccurate financial data which added complexities and inefficiencies in their process.
Decision making: Struggling to make business-critical decisions due to the lack of information.

Our approach

We addressed the challenges faced by a finance team with Google Cloud Platform (GCP).

The project started as a proof of concept on Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS) and was later migrated to Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
A second phase focused on migrating a large volume of transaction data to GCP, as the development team started using GCP as the primary source of financial information.

Given that the project was facing delays and errors with data transfer using IDocs from SAP applications, our team created dashboards on Big Query for real-time error detection and developed a user interface to interact with and reprocess failed IDOCs to ensure data integrity.
Also, an ETL process was established to ingest data from different sources into various data marts, including SAP S4/Hana and Tax Hub.

Results and key takeaways

Through a partnership with Applaudo, a transformative journey was possible through the implementation of Google Cloud by centralizing and simplifying access to data, resulting in improved efficiency.

Centralization of financial information

Information from over 55 data sources was centralized, enhancing search capabilities for collaborators, reducing time spent and improving decision-making processes.

Quick access to real-time data

The migration to GCP revolutionized document accessibility, providing seamless access to over 40 million documents, enhancing response times, and efficiency.

Improved efficiency

Having easy information access led to an impressive 80% reduction in manual processing time, consequently minimizing errors and significantly enhancing efficiency.
